It’s been said that the Margarita was invented by Carlos “Danny” Herrera at the Rancho La Gloria (his restaurant) in Mexico; halfway between Tijuana and Rosarito in 1938ish…
He concocted this spirited mixture for one of his customers, former Ziegfeld dancing showgirl, Marjorie King, who frequented his watering hole on her way to Ensenada. Marjorie was allergic to everything but tequila. To further complications, she couldn’t drink it straight. This is when he came up with this sour concoction and named it the ‘Margarita’; the closest Spanish equivalent for Marjorie.
So, let’s raise your salt-rimmed glass (or two!) and toast to “Danny” on every February 22nd…NATIONAL MARGARITA DAY and say ‘GRACIAS’!
WHAT’S THE SECRET RECIPE?
- 1 oz. Freshly squeezed lime juice
- 1 oz. Cointreau, Triple Sec or another Orange Liqueur
- 2 oz. Tequila
- Kosher Salt (to rim the glass)Add ingredients to a shaker and fill with ice.
Shake well and strain into a chilled, salt-rimmed cocktail glass, margarita glass or rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
Garnish with a lime wheel.
So now that we have the secret recipe (okay, so it’s not so ‘secret’), let share our favorite ‘Margarita Moments’ since our RV adventures on Liberty (or around…or near…or a short drive away…) On occasion, we will order up a Margarita or two…or five for special occasions like….
…and when Emily starts showing her ‘perfect pair’ off, then it’s time to go home. (because tequila might make her clothes fall off!)
We dedicate this blog posting to Carlos “Danny” Herrera!!
