We use our WEN 2000 watt inverter generators to act as our emergency backup power to our RV fifth wheel. We also use them for boondocking and dry camping off the grid. In combination, our two portable Wen 2000 watt inverter generators can run in parallel; providing up to 4000 watts and 30 amp electrical output for half the price as other leading portable generator competitors!

WEN 2000 Watt Inverter Generator – Product Review
Why did we opt for portable generators?
The main reason we opted not to get the onboard generator in our fifth wheel is cost. A pre-installed Onan propane powered generator costs upwards to $5000.
Another reason is, we’d have to either get a certified Onan generator service repair technician come to our site or physically take our entire fifth wheel in for service to get it serviced which adds to cost and inconvenience.
So, instead, we chose two portable 2000 watt inverter generators AND a 30-Amp 3600-Watt Parallel Connection Kit for Inverter Generators.

Why Inverter Generators as opposed to standard contractor grade generators?
We chose inverter generators because they produce cleaner, more consistent voltage. Let’s add in the fact that typically, inverter generators are much quieter with lower decibels. Combined, makes them perfect for RV boondocking and dispersed camping off the grid. But also, should a campground or RV park electricity fail, they are more quiet to run without bothering our neighbors.
Why the WEN brand?
Dan did extensive research as well as read others’ reviews on which portable inverter generator would be suit our needs. While there are other competitors out there with equally proficient products, he chose our WEN 2000 watt inverter generators because of the company’s product reputation as well as EPA compliance.
But another cool reason is these portable inverter generators cost less than half of their leading competitors (Honda, Yamaha, etc.). Each WEN inverter generator comes backed by a 2-year warranty, a nationwide network of skilled service technicians and a friendly customer helpline.
Additionally, we can easily link up two generators using a parallel kit in order to share wattage amongst multiple units. Each WEN has a low-oil and low-fuel automatic shutdown with indication lights along with overload protection safeguard both our generator and electronics from damage.
Finally, their lightweight design makes for easy portability while the ultra-efficient one-gallon tank provides over six (6) hours of half-load run time.
About the WEN 2000 Watt Inverter Generators
The WEN 2000 Watt Inverter Generator produces clean energy free of voltage spikes and drops. It produces clean energy free of voltage spikes and drops.
Designed to mirror a pure sine wave, these Wen inverter generators limit total harmonic distortion to under 0.3 percent at no load and under 1.2 percent at full load, making it safe enough to run laptops, cellphones, monitors, tablets and other vulnerable electronics. They generate 2000 surge watts and 1600 rated watts of power.
These Wen portable generators weigh about 50 pounds each and measure approximately 18″ x 11″ x 18″. So, they are easy to lift, hook up and manage.
Each has a noise level of 51 decibels, quieter than a window air conditioner or the average conversation. They are EPA III and CARB compliant 79.7 cc 4-stroke OHV engines that produce 2000 surge watts and 1600 rated watts.
Each WEN inverter generator comes with a fully-packed panel equipped with two three-prong 120V receptacles, one 12V DC receptacle and one 5V USB port.
And, each maximizes fuel economy by engaging the WEN 2000 Watt Inverter Generator’s Eco Mode. This feature allows the generator’s motor to automatically adjust its fuel consumption as items are plugged and unplugged from the panel, preventing the usage of unnecessary gasoline.
But, you’ll have to take my word for it when I say they are incredibly quiet! So, they are perfect for campgrounds, boondocking off the grid, tailgating and power outages.

Setting up our Wen 2000 Watt Inverter Generators:
After unboxing and inspecting our brand new portable generators, we added .37 quarts of 30W oil and one (1) gallon of 87 octane gasoline to each generator and start them to cycle the fluids through.
The generators were able to provide power for our Landmark fifth wheel’s residential refrigerator, battery charger, and lights. As well, in parallel, they powered one 15000 BTU air conditioner with no problems.
Our fifth wheel had an Electrical Management System (EMS) on board that sheds power to the desired appliances. We only ran them for thirty minutes the first time to ensure correct operation.
Portable Generator Use and Maintenance
Our WEN 2000 watt inverter generators have been run for over 24 hours several times with no adverse issues. They averaged about 10 ½ hours of run time on one gallon of gasoline which makes them incredibly efficient.
After each 50 hours of use, we change the oil in both generators to keep them in top notch operational condition. Our RV’s monthly maintenance schedule includes exercising both generators for two hours to keep them active and to keep fresh fuel in them.
Our Final Review
After using our WEN 2000 watt inverter generators for over 200 hours we are happy to report on their success and reliability. We’ve used the units in multiple boondocking and off grid dry camping situations. We also used them one time at a campground that lost power for 14 hours.
Recapping our WEN inverter generator setup:
- As you can see, the total spent is less than $1000 for everything! Though they are way less expensive than installed systems and other competitive generators, we’ve found them to be equally reliable.
- Our Wen inverter generators have taken our anxiety out of boondocking off the grid or emergency backup. These 2000 watt inverter generators have allowed us to keep our batteries fully-charged as a backup to our solar and energy management systems.

Hi and thanks for the informative review. My family and I are looking for a portable generator for use during emergency situations and when we're going camping. The WEN seemed such a good product and I've seen the site – under $1000, which I think is affordable. I'm also considering a Yamaha or a Honda generator which I've seen in a site with numerous reviews. Do you think those two will measure up with the WEN? I saw the reviews in this site http://myoutdoorslife.com/gear/camping-and-hiking/best-portable-generator.html
How much does the unit cost?
Hi Patrick, thanks for reading. The Wen 2000 Watt Inverter Generators cost a little less than $500 each.
