Reservations
We made reservations with Judy at OBX Campground in January 2018 for a June 2018 stay. Judy was very accommodating with our request to have a water view from the back of our 5th wheel since our workspace looks out the back window. We reserved Site 11 which overlooked the beautiful waterfront dock area of the river. We were charged $70 pre-registration and balance of $330 due at check-in.
The office was simple with a check-in desk and table with lots of tourism booklets and pamphlets.
OBX Campground Location
Located on Colington Island in Kill Devil Hills, down the road from the Wright Brothers Memorial. There was a sign on the corner of the Marshy Ridge Road leading the way to the campground.
The perception of the neighborhood before the campground didn’t dictate our opinion of the campground. Some of the homes were run down and not cared for. Once we entered the campground, we stopped at the parking spot for check-ins.
The gravel roadway throughout the campground was plenty wide to negotiate parking our RV.
OBX Campground is about 2.5 miles to the Wright Brothers, post office, library and beach access.
Check-in
We arrived only minutes after check-in time. Judy was cordial, quick and accommodating with our questions and efficient in the check-in process. She gave recommendations of a couple dining options as well as where to get fresh seafood for our own cooking.
After check-in, we were given our receipt, site map and sheet of OBX Campground rules.
Site & Parking
Our site was exactly as Judy described when making our reservation. The spacing between sites was amazing! Plenty of room to spread out and breath. The campground and our site were neatly mowed and taken care of. Our site was gravel and long enough for our 41′ fifth wheel and our dually. Our site as well as the rest of the campground was neatly mowed.
- The sites are wide open with no trees or shade.
- Each site had a picnic table. There are no fire pits however, the campground staff allowed RV owners to bring their own footed fire pits. No burn rings that laid on the ground were permitted.
- They were very adamant about the speed limit; no faster than 5 mph.
- No more than two vehicles plus camping unit on each site. They charge $5 for each additional vehicle. Extra vehicles must park in overflow lot; not at the site.
- Clotheslines were allowed but only for beach towels and swim wear; kept only under the awning or attached to the RV.
- Golf carts are allowed however operators must be 15 or over.
- No RV, Car, Motorcycle washing.
- Tents are not permitted
- All buildings are smoke free
Ammenities
The grounds were impressive for being a ‘campground’. There was a nice pond with fountain and sitting area. There was no pool or beach however, there was a nice grassy area with a single small fishing/boating dock where kayakers and canoe owners could launch from.
There was a small playground for children to play.
No trash pickup however, there were dumpsters within walking distance in the campground.
The bathhouse consisted of restrooms and 4 large showers. The only negative was the showers had curtains instead of privacy doors. They were exceptionally clean, updated and the lighting was acceptable.
The laundry was an ‘outdoor’ laundry; two washers and two dryers. We did not use so we don’t have a good assessment on cost or use.
Soda machines were located on porch of the office; 24 hour access at 75 cents/can. An ice machine was located on the porch with an honor-system cash drop box.
There was free WiFi however we didn’t use it so we couldn’t give a good assessment on it’s signal strength.
Our Final Review
We LOVED OBX Campground and would definitely stay again! This met all of our expectations and more. Next time, we will have kayaks which will make it all the better! We had no issue with security. We felt safe and enjoyed our stay.
