Top Portable Generators for RV Camping

Unless your RV is equipped with solar panels, ample batteries with necessary components to provide electricity to your camper, you’ll need to look into portable generators to recharge your RV batteries. But, which generator will power your RV or camper?

Do you need a portable generator to power certain components or appliances in your RV or camper? Are you looking to buy a portable generator to power your RV while camping off the grid? Or, do you just need a portable generator to recharge your RV batteries while your boondocking or camping off the grid?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, your next question should be, which portable generator best fits your electrical needs?” We’ll answer all of those questions below.

If you already have an RV but it isn’t equipped with an installed generator, then you should seriously look into buying one for your electric power backup. Portable generators are a fraction of the cost of an installed RV generator.

That said, just buying the cheapest contractor generator at your local hardware store isn’t going to make you any friends. And, you too, will need air plugs because contractor grade generators are notoriously louder.

Contractor Generator

So, it’s best to leave those to the contractors, construction and home builders. They’re nothing but super loud gas guzzlers.

Are two smaller capacity generators better than one large capacity generator?

There are several advantages to having two smaller capacity portable RV generators. For one, a smaller capacity generator is lighter in weight making it easier to carry or load.

Second, they are less expensive. Third, it’s easier to store one or two smaller generators because of their compact size. Also, smaller capacity inverter generators are much quieter which will make your camping neighbors much happier.

Small Portable Generator

And lastly, if one of your smaller generators malfunctions or breaks, you’ll have the other one as your backup generator.

In fact, all of those reasons are why we chose to have two 2000 watt inverter portable generators rather than one huge 4000 watt inverter portable generator for our RV.

Now, typically,  we’d only need to use just one of those 2000 watt generators. But,  if we wanted to run our RV’s air conditioner, we’d just parallel two portable generators together.

So, to simplify all that, we generally just use one of our portable generators to charge our batteries or run basic electricity.
