How to Properly Fly or Display Your American Flag

Flying your American flag on your RV shows your patriotic spirit and love for the USA. But did you know there are proper protocols when flying Old Glory? These simple flag etiquette rules, also known as Flag Code, are put into place as rendering respect to why our American Flag is so important to us.

Our U.S. Flag is also referred to as our National Ensign, Colors and Old GloryThe American flag has fifty white stars in the upper left blue union; representing each State of the Union. From the right of the blue union begins alternating seven red stripes and six white stripes.

American Flag Etiquette

According to U.S. Flag Code, the American flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, or water. Our National Ensign should never be displayed flat or horizontally with the exception of draping of a casket. It should always be aloft and fly free. Our National Ensign should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored so that it might be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

When flying another flag on the same pole or staff, the American flag must always be at the top and larger than any succeeding flag. However, it’s perfectly fine if other flags be of the same size; as long as the our red, white and blue is first.

On certain occasions or applicable holidays, your American flag should be flown at half staff. To render this action respectfully, the flag must be raised to the full height first, then immediately lowered to half staff.

When retiring colors, the American flag must also be raised to the full height immediately before retiring.

American flags that are left up all of the time must have a light shining onto the flag at night or when it’s dark.

And lastly, be respectful of our National Ensign by striking or retiring Old Glory prior to inclement weather.

What flags can I fly from my RV?

American Flag

Most campgrounds allow you to fly any flag you wish from your RV.

However, some private campgrounds are now limiting which flags you can fly. For example, some RV parks and campgrounds ban political flags or flags that make a strong statement.

So, my best advice is, before hoisting whatever flag you wish to fly, to check the campground rules.
