DEET-Free Insect Repellents: Safe and Natural Plant-Based Mosquito Deterrents
Before we get started showcasing our favorite DEET-free insect repellents, let’s talk about some tips as well as some advisements before and after application tips.
These bug sprays and mosquito repellents come in the form of sprays, wipes, balms and bracelets made from or infused with natural essential oils.
So, before reaching for the chemicals-in-a-can or spraying on ingredients you can’t pronounce, let’s take a look at safer alternatives.
Insect Repellent Usage Tips
Do not spray or apply insect repellents in or near your eyes, in your nose or around your mouth. It’s wise to avoid applying to open cuts or sores.
Although these plant-based natural bug repelling personal applications are safer and healthier, they still contain natural essential oils that may irritate skin or cause allergic reaction.
So, always wash your hands before touching any surfaces, your face or ‘down there’. If soap and water aren’t available, we suggest keeping a small packet of baby wipes close by to wipe residue off of your hands.
When stored properly and not exposed to extreme temperatures, personal mosquito repellent products will last for the season; maybe longer.
If you notice any change in odor or appearance or damage to the packaging, replace bug sprays, mosquito and insect repellents with a new product.
It’s also a good idea to replace your bug sprays and other insect repellents every year even though you may still have some left.
While these DEET-free bug sprays and products can be used on children over 3 years of age, consult your child’s pediatrician for approval and application instructions.
Most mosquito or insect repelling bug sprays, balms, creams or lotions supposedly will not damage clothing. However, some may leave oily spots that will need pre-treatment before tossing into the washer.
I do highly recommend washing any clothing that may have insect repellent residue before wearing them again.
Keep n mind that some insect repellents or mosquito deterrent products may damage plastics, wrist watches, jewelry, and synthetic fabrics. Also, direct spraying of insect repellents or residue may damage or discolor surfaces that are painted, gel coated or varnished.
Keep all insect repellents away from open flames, candles and campfires.
Always supervise kids and teens when spraying or applying. Most of all, keep out of reach of small children.
